New show at the Centre for Life explores extreme sports.

July 15, 2008

Health and fitness is the theme this summer at the Centre for Life in Newcastle and with the Olympic Games just around the corner, a new Extreme Sports Show in the Life Theatre will take off in time for the school holidays, from 19th July.

This exciting new show is presented by the Centre for Life’s brilliant science explainers; young, enthusiastic experts who enjoy bringing science to life and making it fun for everyone. They will offer lots of opportunities for participation and interaction, and will explore and demonstrate in gruesome detail why scary, embarrassing and sometimes funny things take place in our bodies when we’re under pressure, in training, or being pushed to the limits of human endurance.

Why do scuba divers often pee in their wet suits without being able to stop themselves? How much sweat do we produce and what purpose does it serve, if any? Why do we feel strangely exhausted at a high altitude and what horrible transformations happen to our skin when we’re really cold?

Through simple experiments, entertaining demonstrations and lots of audience interaction, the Extreme Sports Show will help you understand and unravel some of these mysteries and allow you to recognize how your own body copes in a pressure situation.

Julia Hankin, Head of Marketing at the Centre for Life, said: “Our Life Theatre shows are a huge draw for visitors. This new show is particularly exciting and is full of the kinds of references that make kids, and grown ups, laugh and think. It also ties in nicely with our current exhibition, Fit for Fun, which explores health and fitness in a hands on, entertaining way.”

The Extreme Sports Show will run at regular intervals throughout the day at the Centre for Life from 19th July to 2nd September 2008.
