Botany of Gin workshops at 9pm and 10pm (approx 30 mins)
The North East’s fantastic FREE culture crawl, The Late Shows is back for the second year running and this year promises to be bigger than ever! On Saturday 17 May, NewcastleGateshead will come alive with culture as The Late Shows hit the streets once again.

In celebration of the international event ‘Museums at Night’ a number of cultural venues, usually closed in the evening, are staying up late for one night only. These popular venues are opening their doors after hours, to bring you a spectacular evening packed with unique events and entertainment. Once again a free bus service will be running between the venues, making it easy for people to visit as many venues as possible during this fascinating culture crawl. Visit The Late Shows for more details.
The Botany of Gin
Are all gins the same or do differences in flavour justify the differences in prices?
To celebrate the Late Shows, the Centre for Life will be running two 30 minute workshops at 9pm and 10pm called 'The Botany of Gin.'
In these workshops, we explore the history of the archetypal English tipple from its invention in 17th century Holland through Hogarth's Gin Lane and the gin riots of the 18th century, the invention of the 'gin and tonic' in the 19th century and the rise of so-called 'designer gins' in the 20th century.
Naturally, there will be opportunities to taste selected gins, identify the plants that give them their distinctive flavours and discover the brands you really prefer.
Times Square Cafe will be open until 10.30pm and will be selling a selection of wines and beers.
This is a FREE event and no advanced booking is required. These workshops are STRICTLY for adults only and are available on a first-come-first-served basis.
