Find out how we can see chromosomes, discover how they control gender and find out about the effect of some common chromosome anomalies. Hands-on activities lead into a structured ethical discussion. Chromosomes are the most visible form of DNA and chromosomal anomalies are amongst the more understandable of genetic conditions. Students explore the structure of cells to understand where chromosomes are found and how they are made. They then use giant "foamosomes" to discover how karyotypes are made. The final activity is a structured ethical discussion where the ethical implications of testing for Down's syndrome in pregnancy are considered.
