Genetic engineering for beginners. Students learn about the techniques and applications of genetic engineering, insert foreign genes into bacteria and see the result! Groups can choose to insert the β-gal gene, which produces easily-visualised blue bacterial colonies. For groups studying gene regulation we can use the pGLO system. This contains the GFP gene under the control of the Ara operon and successfully-transformed bacteria glow green under UV light.
