Explore the properties of different materials with a special focus on metals.

This workshop examines the properties of a range of different materials and asks which would be the most appropriate for a suit of armour. After finding out more about different types of armour through the ages, students consider what properties are the most important and what other factors might influence the choice of material.

Focussing on medieval suits of armour, students carry out an investigation to determine which metal is the hardest and consider whether or not their experiments have been a fair test.

Finally students are challenged to design their own suit of armour with a limited amount of starting material.
