Matthew, (Matt), originally from North Shields, currently trains with Dundee Ice Skating Club in Scotland. The 19 year old figure skater made a special trip home to the region to officially open Life's ice rink with a performance of his competitive routine which he hopes will secure him a place at the forthcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Matt said: "I was delighted to be asked to open the ice rink, as I remember coming here when I was younger. I think it's great that there is this facility in the heart of the city allowing people of all ages to come along and give this sport a try. Ice skating is good fun and a great way to enjoy the outdoors over winter."
Life's ice rink, which last year attracted over 80,000 skaters, will be open to the public from Saturday (14th November), and will run through to 21 February 2010. At nearly 500m², it will be one of the largest open air ice rinks in the North and will be open to the public every day until 8pm*.
Linda Conlon, Chief Executive at the Centre for Life, said: "Our open -air ice rink proves very popular every year. It's something that appeals to people of all ages and we've continued the ice theme through the centre to include an 'Animals on Ice' theatre show demonstrating how animals have evolved to cope with and survive in sub- zero temperatures. Overall, it's an innovative and fun way to learn about and experience extreme temperature."
She adds: "We're delighted that Matt could officially open the rink for us and we wish him luck in his bid for the Winter Olympics. Who knows? Life's rink may prove inspiration for future British Champions..."
