Skating - Important Information

Our outdoor ice rink is open on Times Square from 12 November 2016 - 26 February 2017.

  • Group bookings can be taken for 10 people or more. If you're planning a trip for a group of 10 or more, or for school groups, call our bookings line on (0191) 243 8223 (open 9:00am - 5:30pm Monday - Thursday, 9:00am - 5:00pm Friday). Book in advance to receive discounted ticket prices.
  • Less than 10 people in your party? [Page:id=445 type=event|Christmas Eve (24 December)] is the ONLY day on which booking is required for groups of less than 10 people. On all other dates you can just turn up and buy tickets on the day.
  • For group/party bookings: full payment is required in advance (at least 14 days before your planned visit). Sorry, but your visit can’t go ahead without this payment. Please let us know if you would like to increase the numbers in your group and we’ll do our best to accommodate you. Sadly, we can’t guarantee this as there’s limited capacity on the rink – but we’ll always do our best. We don’t offer refunds if fewer people turn up on the day. If a member of your party chooses not to skate on the day of the visit, there’s no reduction in price.
  • If you’re the group organiser, please bring your confirmation letter with you on the day.
  • If you have booked in advance (groups and parties), please arrive in good time. Sorry, but if you’re late we may not be able to get you on the ice.
  • Children aged 9 and under must be accompanied by an adult on the ice rink.
  • Children aged 10 - 12 must be supervised by an adult (adults can watch from the viewing platform if they prefer).
  • As little ones aged 4 and under need more supervision, adults should have no more than TWO children of this age with them on the ice.
  • As space on the viewing platform is limited, it’s for parents and guardians supervising their children only - sorry.
  • We’re hardy Northerners but sometimes the great British weather gets the better of us (yes - there is such a thing as the ‘wrong type of snow’...). If the rink closes due to bad weather, we will do our very best to reschedule your visit to a date of your choice. Sorry, but no refunds will be given.
  • Sessions last for approximately one hour.
  • Skates are provided; you are welcome to use your own skates but we can’t offer a discount if you do - sorry!
  • For those visiting the Science Centre too: please note that there’s a minimum height requirement of 1.2 metres on the 4D Motion Ride.
  • If you leave the rink and hand in your skates, you have to buy another ticket to skate again.
  • We provide wrist bands to all customers to help with timings - please have yours visible and hand it in with your skates at the end of the session. Thanks!
  • The serious bit:

  • We want you to have a safe and happy experience, but it is an ice rink, so all skaters participate at their own risk.
  • Management reserve the right to refuse entry – we don’t often have to do this thankfully!
  • Lockers are available (for a small charge) to store valuables but ultimately your items (including shoes) are left at your own risk.
  • Other stuff you need to know:

  • It’s good to wear suitable clothing. Shorts are great for Majorca but we find waterproofs, hats and gloves work best on the rink. It’s a good idea to bring a change of clothing too (particularly spare socks!).
  • Gloves and socks can be bought from the Life shop if you’re caught short.
  • To keep things moving (and safe) on the rink, please skate anti-clockwise.
  • Please don’t throw ice/snow balls (it’s not nice).
  • Only skaters are allowed on the ice.
  • Please don’t join hands with friends/family: it might look good but it can result in accidents - ouch!
  • Cigarettes and alcohol might be okay for rock bands, but they’re not allowed on the ice. Food and drinks generally prove to be hazardous so please tuck in before or after your skate.
  • Our ice marshals are a friendly bunch and are there to make your visit as safe and enjoyable as possible. Feel free to ask them for advice and should they ask you to do something, please listen - they talk sense and want you to be safe.
  • If you, or someone with you, has an accident please tell an ice marshal.
  • If anyone behaves in a generally daft manner (endangering themselves or other people), the Duty Manager will ask them to leave.
  • Times Square Café is usually open to buy Starbucks coffee and delicious hot and cold food. You can also indulge in a bit of a retail therapy in the Life shop.
