Working with scientists

Have you ever met a real scientist? We regularly invite scientists to set up stall in our Science Centre for visitors to meet.

Life welcomes scientists!

We welcome scientists to join us in the science centre. This is a great a chance for visitors to ask questions, learn about what different scientists do on a day-to-day basis and how they got into their chosen field, and maybe even help them with their research.

All sorts of people work in the sciences, and we want our visitors to experience this diversity and be inspired to get more involved in science themselves!

For scientists, it’s a chance to engage the public with their work, spread knowledge and awareness and perhaps gather some data.

Why engage with the public?

Public Engagement is a brilliant way to interact with an already switched-on, enthusiastic and interested audience and doing it at Life means you can:
  • Inspire children, adults and families in your subject area, research or job. It gives you an opportunity to talk to them about what drives you, your passions and interests.
  • Encourage people to help you do your research, collect data from certain age groups or family groups.
  • Broadcast the results of your research, talk about why it’s important and what has been discovered.

Public Engagement Training

Our in-house experts are gauging interest in a half day training course for scientists. The focus will be on getting people interested, avoiding confusion, finding your story, knowing your audience and dealing with questions. If you'd be interested, let us know by emailing meetthescientist@life.org.uk

Here are some of the scientists we've met so far:

Stephen Boddy - Anatomist

During the BODY WORLDS Vital exhibition in 2014, Northumbria University Anatomy Demonstrator, Stephen Boddy, visited regularly to educate Life's visitors about the human body.

Andrew Winnard - Aerospace Medicine Researcher

Andrew Winnard from the UK Space Biomedicine Association showed visitors how to train like an astronaut. The data he collected from Life visitors is helping to rehabilitate astronauts when they return from spaceflights.

Kirsty Lees - Marine Biologist

Kirsty Lees and trusty assistant Captain Pinchy the real live lobster helped visitors learn about our seas, the creatures that inhabit them, and how we study them.
