I'm a Scientist

Book a free online chat to connect your students with our Science Explainers and experience their favourite science centre exhibits virtually.

We know our Science Explainers are inspiring role models for young people – sharing their enthusiasm for STEM and the career opportunities afforded by STEM subjects. In our new online I'm a Scientist sessions, pupils can ask them questions about studying and working in science and explore their favourite science centre exhibits via a text-based chat.

The sessions are recommended for students in Years 5 – 9 and the chats provide a safe and secure online experience. There’s no need to download software – you only need access to an internet browser. This means chats could still take place if students are learning from home.

A session lasts for 45 minutes and you have the option of using a selection of additional themed resources and hands-on activities to prepare your students ahead of the chat, or to continue the learning experience afterwards, either in-class or as homework.

Chats are free, but availability is limited, so booking is essential. (Pupils should only take part in one session.) There are sessions available between 9.00am and 3.30pm on the following dates during Autumn Term:

  • 21 October 2020
  • 3 November 2020
  • 11 November 2020
  • 19 November 2020
  • 27 November 2020
  • 2 December 2020
  • 7 December 2020

Resources to accompany your I'm a Scientist session

We've developed some activities that your students can enjoy before or after their booked session. Please see the tiles below.

The Sphere
The Sphere uses information from satellites and from measurements taken around the world to create images and maps that show how climate change is affecting our planet.

Masiakasaurus is part of a family of animals that ruled the Earth for over 160 million years: dinosaurs. They include some of the largest reatures to ever walk the Earth.

Mars Rover
Mars is millions of miles away from the Earth, so we haven’t been able to send humans to explore… yet! We have, however, sent satellites into orbit and rovers to drive around the surface.

The Brain
Our brains are the most complicated structure we humans have ever tried to study. Billions of cells are linked together, firing tiny zaps of electricity to make you think, make you breathe and do everything you do!
