Plans carved out for festive launch at Life Science Centre

On Friday 9 November, a life-size sleigh carved from more than half a tonne of ice will take centre stage at the official launch event for Life Science Centre’s festive season.

The sleigh will be carved on-site from early that morning and the finished sculpture presented on Life’s outdoor ice rink for the official launch event at 2.00pm. Members of the public will have the opportunity to take selfies in the ice sleigh after the launch event, which will also feature a musical performance by the singing trio The Bluebirds – and possibly an appearance from Santa.

Sarah Reed, Communications Manager at Life, said: “The ice sleigh will be available for one day only before we bring out the pickaxes and clear the rink, ready for skating the following day. So, if you want to capture the ultimate winter selfie from inside the sleigh, come and join us at our launch event!”

Whilst the ice rink will be the focus of the official launch, the event marks the launch of a wide array of wintry activities at Life Science Centre. Over the next few weeks, children can get stuck into making festive creations to take home, including LED decorations and winter lanterns. In the Experiment Zone*, visitors can investigate fake snow and, for a frostier experience, hop aboard The Polar Express Journey to the North Pole on the 4D Motion Ride*.

As well as taking a spin on the ice rink**, visitors can meet Santa** when he visits his grotto in Times Square every weekend from 17 November – 23 December.

For those who enjoy a family sci-fi movie at Christmas, the new exhibition Alien Invasion (opens 22 December) is a must. And if you’re not quite feeling the Christmas spirit, then indulge your inner Grinch with the live show How to be an Evil Genius***.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Christmas Village will be setting up camp alongside Life’s ice rink in Times Square, with traditional German street food huts, chestnuts roasting on a log fire, a Bavarian beer hall and a full-size carousel.

The ice sleigh will only be available on Friday 9 November. Visitors will be able to sit inside the sleigh from 2.30-7.00pm. Non-slip rubber matting along the perimeter of the rink will lead to the sleigh.

Public skating will be available from 10.00am on Saturday 10 November 2018, and will be open every day except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day until 24 February 2019.

The Christmas Village will open at 5.00pm on Friday 9 November.
