Newcastle’s Christmas - the best one yet

Christmas in Newcastle this year promises to be the best one yet, with a new city-wide experience offering something for everyone to enjoy.

And the festivities have truly begun. The Fenwick window was unveiled last week, for many the traditional start to the festive season in Newcastle; and this week the city will be lit-up in its full glory when the Christmas lights are switched on by Sam Fender on Thursday evening (7 November), followed by the return of Life Science Centre’s seasonal ice rink on Saturday (9 November).

Newcastle City Council has been working with NE1 and partners Fenwick and Life Science Centre on Newcastle’s Christmas, with a new Christmas trail and website that will help everyone navigate themselves around the Christmas events and activities in the city.

And added to this, the exciting new Christmas Markets, the much-loved Grainger Market and New Year’s Eve fireworks both at 6pm and midnight, we are certainly in for a treat this year.

The improved Christmas experience in the city supports the council’s plans to make Newcastle a world-class shopping and leisure destination. This is a hugely important time of year for the city, and this new-look Christmas offer will showcase it in the best possible light for the increased number of people expected in the city centre at this time.

Cllr Ged Bell, Cabinet member for Employment and Culture at Newcastle City Centre said: “I am very much looking forward to Christmas in Newcastle this year.

“We want to create a new experience in the city for both local people and visitors, similar to other cities that have a successful Christmas offer. This will help position Newcastle as a major festive destination, and by working with partners and creating a Christmas trail I feel confident we can achieve this.

“The increased footfall this will undoubtedly bring will be good for the local economy, which in turn benefits everyone who lives in the city. And by promoting everything on offer this Christmas, we can encourage people to visit all of the locations across the city centre.”

Linda Conlon, Chief Executive of Life, said: “Skating at Life has been an important part of a festive family day out in Newcastle for the past two decades. I’m delighted that the ice rink and the science centre’s festive-themed activities can now play a role in supporting the city to become a prime UK destination for the holiday season.”

Carl Milton, Store Director at Fenwick Newcastle, said: “We are delighted to play our part in Newcastle’s Christmas this year which is set to be the best yet. It is only right as one of the city’s most-established retailers that we help to encourage footfall to the North East and ensure visitors and residents alike see it for what it is, a really vibrant and exciting place to live, do business and visit.”
