“I worked as a science explainer for three years and the role helped massively with what I do now, and also my journey to get here.”

Life is celebrating its 25th birthday this year! Over the past quarter-century, it has made a lasting impact – from babies born through groundbreaking fertility treatments to patients benefiting from pioneering research and clinical care. And, of course, the science centre has inspired and entertained thousands of families, school groups, and adults.

As we mark this milestone, we’re sharing stories from those whose lives have been shaped by Life.

Working as a science explainer at Life Science Centre almost 20 years ago was an important first step for a career in science for Carl Dale.

Now CEO of North East technology firm Microbritt, developing technology for medical, space and quantum appliances, Dr Carl Dale was a student when he first came to work at Life in 2006.

Carl said: “I was studying for my Science Masters Degree and then later my PhD when I started working at Life. It started as a part time job to help me pay the bills but soon became much more.

“I was new to the city and the team at Life made me feel very welcome and I made lasting friendships including meeting my wife Niamh.

“Being able to use the knowledge from my studies in my role was an added bonus as well as lots of fun.

“I have many happy memories from working at Life including performing a live theatre show to the then Prime Minister Gordon Brown. I worked as a science explainer for three years and the role helped massively with what I do now, and also my journey to get here.

“My time at Life gave me great confidence to allow me to engage on STEM subjects with people from a variety of backgrounds and overcome the fear of public speaking, which proved essential when pitching to investors when starting the company I founded.”
