The International Centre for Life has appointed two new Trustees to support and help shape the future vision of the landmark science hub.
Dr Fozia Saleem, CEO of contract research organisation Magnitude Biosciences and Dr Owen Burbidge, Councillor for Newcastle City Council, both join the Board of Trustees and will help shape Life’s strategic direction.
Fozia graduated from Manchester University with a Pharmacology degree before studying a PhD in molecular physiology at Edinburgh University. Since then, she has notched up 20 years’ experience in the global life sciences sector in research and development, contract research and bringing products to market.
“I was the first in my family to go to university, so I had to push through a few glass ceilings, and I really think it’s so important to break STEM barriers among children and raise aspirations. That is what Life excels at, my 10-year-old son and eight-year-old daughter love coming here and I am really looking forward to building on the excellent work Life has done to date.”
Owen Burbidge, Liberal Democrats councillor for West Fenham, is Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy and Skills at the City Council.
He graduated from Newcastle University with a degree in Biochemistry before studying for a PhD in Pharmacology at The University of Cambridge. Since then, Owen has gained experience across research roles in the pharma, life sciences and public sector. Since 2022, he has worked at Innovate UK Business Connect as a Knowledge Transfer Manager, specialising in medicines manufacturing and supporting life sciences businesses across the UK.
He became a Newcastle City Councillor in May this year.
“Life has such an important part to play within the city, region, nationally and internationally to help inspire children from all different backgrounds, making people realise that you don’t have to come from a STEM pedigree to be able to access science – and I’m looking forward to being part of that.”
