Group of skaters enjoying private hire of Life Science Centre's city centre ice rink.

Life’s open-air ice rink returns for the festive season until Sunday 7 January

Situated in Times Square, just outside Life Science Centre, the rink is ideal for ice skaters of all abilities and ages.

Skating sessions last approximately one hour (includes time to fit skates so expect 45 minutes on the ice). To avoid disappointment, we recommend booking tickets online ahead of your visit.

Separate admission fees apply between 22-24 December. You can also combine your skate with a trip to see our What Santa Sees planetarium show in the afternoon during the week.

Annual science centre members enjoy a discounted rate on skating – simply select a member ticket when pre-booking online.

Useful info before your skate

  • Children aged 9 years and under must be accompanied by an adult on the ice. Children aged 10 – 12 years must be supervised by an adult, either on the ice rink or from the viewing platform.
  • Skating aids can be hired on the day of your visit for £5.00 (subject to availability). They are suitable for children under 1.2 metres in height.
  • Space on the viewing platform is limited and reserved for those supervising their children.
  • Skate hire is included in your ticket. If you have your own skates you’re welcome to use them, but we can’t give discounts.
  • Lockers are available from reception for a small charge to store valuables, but ultimately all items (including shoes) are left at your own risk.
  • Please wear suitable clothing – waterproofs, hats and gloves are recommended. Some people like to bring a change of clothing – particularly spare socks. Gloves and socks can be bought from the Life shop if you’re caught short.
  • If you use a wheelchair and you would like to use the rink, we recommend that you visit during quieter times (early sessions at weekends). If the rink is quiet enough, we can provide foot grips to accompanying carers. We’d recommend calling the team on 0191 243 8210 ahead of your visit to avoid disappointment. Carers visit free of charge.
