Figure skater Callum Leach brought a dash of festive glitter to Newcastle’s Times Square, as he officially opened the annual open-air ice rink outside Life Science Centre.
Former British National Championship Junior skater Callum has toured with Disney on Ice since 2011 and has performed across Europe, America and Asia.
Last night (7 November) Callum was the first to skate on Life’s ice rink, performing a dazzling festive routine.
Backworth Colliery Band also entertained invited guests who later joined Callum on the ice.
Life’s outdoor rink, made from real ice, is an established part of the festive calendar in the city and is open until 4 January, providing skaters of all ages and abilities with the ultimate festive experience. As Life is a charity, it provides a vital revenue stream.
Callum, from Cullercoats, said: “As a local, I’ve always made the trip into the city centre during the festive period to skate at Life. I’ve been skating here every Christmas since I was a child, and it feels as special now as it did then.”
As well as regular skating sessions, there are a range of special events including themed evenings celebrating Sam Fender, Taylor Swift and K-pop – as well as karaoke on ice!
There are also relaxed sessions for people with sensory needs (with adjusted lighting and reduced sound levels). An early bird £10 ticket is available for the opening weekend (November 8-9).
From 10 November onwards, tickets cost £15.50 for adults; £14.00 for aged 10 and over and £12.00 for aged 9 and under with separate charges for peak times (Christmas Eve). There is also the option to buy a flexi-ticket for an extra £1.50 in case you need to rearrange your booking.
Online booking is recommended and for more details visit our ice skating page.
