Life has come up with the perfect science to enjoying a summer’s day whatever the weather… moving the outdoors, indoors!

The new Outdoors, Indoors garden area in the award-winning science centre forms part of a fabulous package of entertaining and educational activities for families this summer.

Keep cool or escape the rain as you decorate beach huts, sit back on a giant deckchair or play traditional games such as hoopla, skittles or hook a duck in the new garden area.

Earth Defenders! is a new animated show, written and produced in-house, for the Planetarium, which is the largest in the north and uses the most advanced technology available for high-resolution visuals and sound quality.

The 360° immersive dome show features five sentinels of the sky – asteroid detector NEOWISE, friend of the forest Biomass, inspector of ice and oceans CryoSat-2, warden of the weather MetOp and global guider Galileo. Together they are tasked with seeing off threats, from asteroids to climate change, in this retro 1980s style show.

Visitors can also travel back in time in the latest live show Great North Time Machine which celebrates iconic local inventions while exploring what could be the big ideas of the future.

Other visitor favourites include the Experiment Zone (age restrictions apply) where you can be a real scientist for the day; hands-on exhibits in the Wow Zone; and for younger ones, the revamped Play Zone, which includes an outdoor marketplace and a coastal mural area, complete with a boat and a lighthouse.

This weekend, (August 3-4), visitors can enjoy a 20% discount on science centre tickets by booking online and using the discount code WEEKENDSAVER.

The summer programme runs from now until 1 September and all activities are covered with the entry ticket.
