Newcastle’s Life Science Centre is cutting entry fees for those on Universal Credit in a bid to give families a helping hand.
From Monday 24 August to Wednesday 30 September 2026, anyone eligible for Universal Credit can enjoy a full day of science-fuelled fun at a reduced rate of £5 per ticket, with an option to buy for themselves and for up to five others.
That means a group of six can enjoy everything Life has to offer for just £30.
Life trialed a Universal Credit scheme last summer which proved very popular, with 40% of daily visitors using the offer; 83% of which were first-time visitors to Life.
A visitor who took advantage of the offer last year said: “Being a single parent who is lucky enough to get all the holidays off from work, I struggle to entertain the children everyday. This is a fantastic offer which helps parents like myself give our children a great experience and day out.”
The Universal Credit scheme is being reintroduced in response to the cost-of-living pressures that many households are facing and builds on Life’s mission to make science accessible to as many people as possible.
Visitors can enjoy a full day of activities included with admission, from immersive exhibitions and live science shows to 360° degree shows in the Planetarium and creative making activities.
A highlight this summer is The Great Dinosaur Escape, which has been attracting record-breaking visitor numbers since opening. The North’s biggest collection of moving dinosaurs features more than 25 dinosaurs, including a towering 9-metre T.rex, a baby Stegosaurus, and plenty more prehistoric legends.
Visitors can also explore Lightbox, a space filled with light, sound and water phenomena, including Europe’s highest tornado tower. In Wow Zone, families can try out engaging exhibits like the Big Machine and pulley chair races, while Space Zone features a replica of the International Space Station.
Younger visitors can explore Play Zone, designed especially for early years learning and discovery.
Reduced Universal Credit tickets can be purchased on the website from today (17 August) or in person on arrival at the science centre reception (from 24 August). Universal Credit tickets cannot be bought in conjunction with other offers, discounts or promotions. Proof of eligibility may be required at reception.
