Event details

Life Science Centre is home to the North’s biggest and best planetarium.

Here, the skies are darker, the stars are brighter, the planets are so clearly defined, it looks like you could reach out and touch them.

Thanks to the most sophisticated digital technology available, you can:

  • Experience the most immersive, absorbing journeys through space and the solar system.
  • See stunning space films and visuals that you won’t see anywhere else in the region.
  • Experience real-time Live Skies shows where you can find out what’s happening in space right now.
  • Zoom through space and land on planets throughout our solar system.
  • Journey through the stars and see surfaces of planets and moons in spectacular high definition detail.
  • All from the comfiest seats in the region!

We offer a mix of traditional planetarium shows and creative animated films, including films especially for under 7s. We also have a range of special curriculum-linked planetarium workshops for schools and other groups.

Live planetarium shows led by Life's Science Explainers

Live Skies takes place at 4.00pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays during term time and at 5.00pm every day during school holidays.

Our planetarium presenters take you on a tour of the night sky and describe current space missions to collect samples from asteroids. Asteroids have had a bad press – we often think of the death of the dinosaurs – but they are a source of unparalleled information about the early history of our Solar System. Current space missions to collect samples from these distant space rocks and return them to Earth are both technically ambitious and intellectually exciting. They are a step on our journey to answer deep questions about our origins.

Please note that during term time before 2pm the planetarium can be busy with school visits. To avoid disappointment, please call us on the day of your visit.

The planetarium is equipped with an analogue induction loop and has spaces for wheelchairs.

During busy times, we request that you visit the planetarium, Science Theatre and Motion Ride once - this is to allow other visitors to enjoy the experience too. Thanks for your consideration.
